Subject: Haslett Hosting plan

Hi Everyone,

I've been Rui Niu's counterpart from Haslett H.S. as we've planned this student exchange. Thank you so much for hosting our guests. I am copying below our plans for the time when the Chinese guests arrive in Haslett. Please feel free to read it ALL :-) and to take part in whatever way you wish. (You might be very interested in the info near the very end!) We look forward to meeting you on Thursday, August 18 for our potluck dinner. Here is our plan as was written to Haslett families:

First, we will have a potluck dinner on Thursday, August 18. Millie Heinz will be emailing you soon regarding details about it. The present host families will join us and will bring our Chinese guests. We'll have dinner together and have a little welcome - and then Haslett families will take their guests home.

On Wednesday, August 24, Haslett students return to school. Our student hosts should bring their Chinese guests to school - AND should bring them to the Viking Room by 7:45 a.m.

Our Chinese guests will NOT be in HHS classes that day. We will have another activity for them that day so that HHS students can focus completely on the many details of the first day. IF THERE ARE ANY PARENTS INTERESTED IN HELPING TO ORGANIZE THIS DAY FOR THE CHINESE STUDENTS OR IF YOU ARE AVAILABLE TO BE WITH THEM FOR AN EXCURSION ON THIS DAY, PLEASE EMAIL ME RIGHT AWAY. THANKS!

From Thursday, Aug 25 through Thursday, Sept. 1, HHS host students will take their Chinese guest to classes and lunch with them. If there are sports practices, etc., you can take your guest to these or make arrangements for them to go home or with another student. You are responsible for your guest.

From Tuesday, September 6 through Tuesday, September 7, our Chinese guests will be with HHS "day hosts." This way the students will experience other classes at HHS. We will be seeking HHS student volunteers for the "day host" positions. If you know of someone who is interested, let me know asap. (Note: if we find we have a large number of students interested in day hosting, we will divide the time into three periods instead of two.)

The HHS Diversity Club will be organizing an all-day trip for the guests and HHS students. We will expect to have all HHS student hosts and their Chinese guests come to our Monday morning meetings AT 7:20 a.m. in the Viking Room on Monday, August 29. All China travelers should attend also. It is very important that you are all there.

While your guests are with you, keep in mind that they are interested in experiencing American life as much as possible. It is lovely for you to share special excursions, but the day-to-day events are just as important to them. As for specific ideas, it would be great for you to arrange for them to attend at least one HHS home football game - we will provide free tickets if you let me know in advance. A school dance would also be quite an experience for them! Other ideas are Lugnuts games, Lake Michigan (Grand Haven is just two hours away), Lake Lansing, bowling, and whatever your family enjoys. Time relaxing at home is great, too! As for your place of worship, feel free to invite your guest to attend with you, but be sure it is seen as optional.

I have written for a grant and am hoping to receive it, so if you need some money for your guest's admission costs, etc. please feel free to let me know. Also, if you have an idea for a large group (families) activity, please write to us about it.

I believe our Chinese guests will be leaving on September 8 from Lansing Capital City Airport. As soon as I receive more information, I will let you know. I think it would be nice for us to plan a farewell event. If you have ideas, let me know.

A wonderful web site about this cultural exchange has been developed. Please visit it (and see all the great photos) at www.us-chinaedu.com

I hope this answers some of your questions, but if you have others, please feel free to email or call me at any time (339-8249 x 204.) I'm looking forward to seeing you on August 18.

Lynn Bartley
